You were excited when you started. You told yourself, “This time, I’m going to learn tech and actually stick with it.”

Then reality happened.

The classes became confusing. You couldn't understand some of the things being taught. You missed a few sessions because life got busy, and before you knew it, you were already behind. Then you started seeing people online sharing their tech success stories, and suddenly you began wondering if you were even good enough.

Eventually, you stopped.

And honestly, you're not alone.

A lot of Nigerians start their tech journey with excitement but quit somewhere along the way. Sometimes, it isn't because they're lazy or not smart enough. They simply don't have the right guidance, expectations, or support to keep going.

1. They Start Because Everyone Is Saying “Learn Tech” 

Let's be honest. You see someone on social media saying they landed a remote job after learning tech, and suddenly you're thinking, “I need to learn tech too.”

But you haven't really taken the time to ask yourself what you actually want to learn or why you're choosing it.

So you jump from one skill to another. Today it's Cybersecurity, tomorrow it's Data Analysis, next week you're watching videos about UI/UX, and before long, you're overwhelmed and haven't properly learned any of them.

There's nothing wrong with exploring different areas, but eventually, you need to choose a direction and give yourself time to grow in it.

2. You Expect Results Too Quickly

This is another big one.

You've been learning for two or three weeks and you're already asking, “So when am I getting a job?”

I understand. We all want to see results from the effort we're putting in.

But learning a digital skill takes time. You need to understand the basics, practice, make mistakes, ask questions, improve, and gradually become confident enough to use what you've learned.

Don't give up simply because you haven't seen results yet. Sometimes, you're making more progress than you realize.

3. You're Trying to Figure Everything Out Alone

YouTube is great. There is so much free information available online, but sometimes, having too much information can make things even more confusing.

One person tells you to start here. Another person says you should learn something else first. Someone recommends a completely different tool, and suddenly you don't even know what you're supposed to be learning anymore.

This is where having a structured learning path and someone who can guide you becomes important. You don't have to spend months figuring everything out through trial and error.

4. You're Comparing Your Beginning to Someone Else's Success

You see someone announce their first remote job. Someone else posts their new certification. Another person is talking about how much they're earning from their tech career.

And suddenly, you feel like you're not doing enough.

But remember, you're seeing their results, not everything that happened before they got there.

You don't know how many times they struggled, failed, started again, or felt like giving up.

Your journey doesn't have to look like theirs.

5. And Sometimes, You're Simply Not Practicing Enough

Learning isn't just about attending classes or watching tutorials.

You have to actually use what you're learning.

Practice with projects. Try things yourself. Make mistakes. Get stuck. Ask questions. Try again.

That's how the knowledge starts becoming a real skill.

The Truth Is, You Don't Have to Be Perfect

Maybe you've started learning tech before and stopped. Maybe you're currently struggling with your course. Or maybe you've been thinking about starting but you're afraid you won't be able to keep up.

That's okay.

You don't need to know everything today. You need the right direction, consistent practice, proper guidance, and the willingness to keep going even when it gets difficult.

Starting is important, but staying the course is what makes the difference.
